Maize crops are off to a strong start following the good weather during the month of May, according to Teagasc’s Tim O’Donovan.

The Teagasc Crop Specialist said that the weather conditions during May, June and July have a big impact on yield of maize.

“Basically maize grown under plastic is starting to break through. Over the last three weeks there has been strong growth.

“Uncovered maize crops are at about the two-to-three week growth stage and should be receiving its final application of herbicide over the next couple of days,” he said.

However, O’Donovan added that despite the good weather during the month of May, the weather over the next two months will have a big impact on the yield potential of maize crops.

The temperature in May, June and July are critical for a good yield of maize. June and July will be significant for this year’s crop.

Covered verses uncovered maize crops

O’Donovan also spoke about the differences between uncovered and covered maize crops, saying that farmers should aim for at least a 15t/ha crop.

Farmers who grow uncovered maize crops are putting themselves at high risk, as yields from these crops tend to be lower in poor years, O’Donovan said.

The yields of uncovered maize crops can vary quite a bit, he said, with some crops producing 8t/ha while others can grow up to 20t/ha.

The reliability of maize grown under plastic has increased quite a bit.

O’Donovan also said that maize grown under plastic tends to have a higher starch content, which is key for the final feeding value of the maize silage.

“In terms of quality material there is quite a significant difference between covered and uncovered maize silage.

“The starch in the covered crops is always 2-3% higher,” he said.
