Derry Dillon, a stalwart of Macra na Feirme, will take the reins of the Agricultural Science Association (ASA) later today.
A native of Co. Kerry, Dillon has worked with the young farmers’ organisation for a number of years and currently holds the role of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Manager.
An announcement on Dillon’s appointment to the role of president is expected to be made following the ASA’s annual general meeting today, September 8.
Dillon will become the 67th President of the ASA – the professional body for graduates in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, environmental and food sciences in Ireland.
A holder of a masters degree in Agriculture and Rural Development from University College Dublin (UCD), he will become the leader of the organisation representing over 2,000 agri-food sector professionals.
Glanbia’s Amii McKeever is expected to take up the vice president’s position following today’s meeting.
Like Dillon, McKeever is expected to step into the role of president once her 12-month tenure as vice president comes to an end in September 2018.
Agri professionals say Brexit offers some benefits
More than half (51%) of professionals working within the agri-food industry believe that Brexit could offer a positive opportunity for Ireland, according to a survey carried out among members of the ASA.
This figure marks a significant increase in positive sentiment, jumping a considerable 23% from the 28% recorded in 2016.
