Loose cattle on the M3 motorway have caused the road to be closed this morning, both northbound and southbound, according to AA Roadwatch.

A tweet before seven o’clock this morning from AA Roadwatch said that the M3 was closed southbound after J6 Dunshaughlin following a multi-vehicle crash involving cattle.

It is understood that up to five cars could be involved in the collision and emergency services are at the scene. The extent of the injuries to the occupants of the cars is unknown.

The latest update from AA Roadwatch is that the M3 is closed both ways from J5 Dunboyne to J7 Skyrne and Gardai are diverting traffic in the area.

The Gardai tweeted confirmation of the road closure in both directions.
