Heifers reached €4,200 at the Irish Holstein Friesian Association’s sale which was held in conjunction with its open day in Ballinasloe, Co. Galway on Tuesday.
Over 30 heifers were offered for sale from the host farmer Tommy Screene’s Windfield herd. The herd has impressive performance figures averaging 8,200kg of milk at 3.83% fat and 3.5% protein.
Prior to the sale, the Holstein heifers were described as a very impressive group from some of the very best cow families in the herd.
The top priced heifer on the day was Windfield Katie 17, a February 2014 born daughter of Bomaz Marion Emerald.
The heifer had an EBI of €115 and is due to calf in early November and she sold for €4,200.
Next best in the ring was an April 2014 born daughter of the Italian bull Pirolo Goldwyn Wyman, which sold for €3,180.
The heifer, Windfield Katie 19 had an EBI of €148 and is from a ‘great protein family’ and is due to calve next October.
Another heifer, Windfield Mary 25 also broke the €3,000 mark. The February 2014 born daughter of Ladys-Manor Dodge had an EBI of €39 and sold for €3,020.

A number of spring calving heifers were also offered for sale on the day.
One of the best-priced spring calving heifers on the day was Windfield Venture 19. The February 2015 born heifer after Pirolo Goldwyn Wyman sold for €3,000.
The heifer, which was described as a fancy show heifer, had an EBI of €104 and was bred on June 14.
Windfield Aoibhinn 4, the October 2014 born heifer sired by Cogent Twist sold for €2,020. She had an EBI of €148 and is due to calve on March 1.
Another spring-calving heifer – Windfield Helen 9 sold for €1,720. The daughter of Nog Guardi is due to calve next January.
The sale also featured a high clearance rate, with just two heifers failing to sell. Most of the heifers on offer sold between €1,500-4,200.
