It was the wettest August in six years for some parts of the country, Met Eireann has said.

Those counties with the wettest August were along Atlantic coasts. Knock Airport, Co. Mayo recorded the highest long-term average (LTA) rainfall values with 165% and 178.2mm of rain.

Almost one-fifth of that rain fell on August 22, the month’s wettest day and wettest August day since bith 2008 and 2008, Met Eireann said.

LTA rainfall averages were lowest at Johnstown Castle, Co. Wexford. It had a monthly rainfall total of 54.2mm.

Numerous stations reported three or more very wet days (days with 10mm or more), with some stations in the West reporting over five.

Temperature: coldest August for 29 years in parts

Valentia Observatory, Co. Kerry, recorded its coldest August in 29 years with a mean temperature of 13.9 degrees Celsius while Ballyhaise, Co. Cavan reported its coldest August in 22 years with a mean temperature of 13.8 degrees.

The majority of highest temperatures were recorded on the August 18 and 20, with the month’s highest temperature of 24.2 degrees recorded at Dublin (Phoenix Park) on the 18, its highest for August in nine years, Met Eireann said.

The majority of lowest air and grass minima were recorded on the August 7, 13 and 25 with the month’s lowest air temperature recorded at Mountdillon, Co. Roscommon on the 13 with 3.5 degrees.

Met Eireann said that Valentia Observatory also reported a highest maximum of 18.3 degrees, its lowest during August since 1940.

Sunshine: Cork Airport reports sunniest August day in nine years

The most sunshine in one day was 14.1 hours reported at Cork Airport on the 12, its sunniest August day in nine years, Met Eireann said.

Monthly sunshine totals ranged from 72.7 hours (daily mean of 2.4 hrs/day) at Knock Airport (its dullest August since the station opened in 1996) to 163.9 hours (daily mean of 5.3 hrs/day) at Shannon Airport, Co Clare (its sunniest August since 2010), it said.

The number of dull days (days with less than 0.5 hours of sun) ranged from three at numerous locations to eight at Knock Airport.
