It was a record-breaking day for the Wicklow Cheviot Sheep Breeders Group at Blessington Mart on Tuesday last (September 8).

First prize Cheviot hoggets, bred by John Burke, sold for a record-breaking price of €400/head, while second prize hoggets bred by Liam Hopkins sold for a cool €260/head.

Third place prize winners sold for a whopping €315/head, in what could only be described as a smashing trade. Overall, hoggets sold from €200/head up to €400/head.

The prices for hoggets on Tuesday last was well up on last year’s sale. This time last year, at the same sale, hoggets topped out at €210/head.

There was a great trade for three and four-year-old ewes as well, with the first prize winners making €210/head, while the second prize winners exchanged hands at €190/head. In general, three and four-year-old ewes made from €140/head up to €252/head.

Finally, in the ewe lamb section, a top price of €237/head was achieved for a pen of lambs bred by Patrick Moloney. Other notable prices for ewe lambs on the day were €222/head for the third place prize winners, while the first place prize winners sold for €190/head.
