A tractor drawing a trailer was seized by members of An Garda Síochána in Co. Meath after the driver was initially stopped by Gardaí for being on a phone.
Following an initial stop, members of An Garda Síochána’s Meath Roads Policing Unit subsequently discovered that the tractor had not been taxed in over a decade and a half.
It also emerged that the trailer being drawn by the vehicle had “excessively worn tyres”.
This resulted in the tractor being seized by Gardaí and the issuing of a Fixed Charge Penalty Notice (FCPN).
Meath Roads Policing stopped this tractor when they found the driver on their phone. Using the Mobility App it was found that the vehicle had not been taxed for 16 years and that the trailer tyres were excessively worn. The vehicle was seized. Taking to social media earlier today, Friday (September 11), the An Garda Síochána Twitter page explained:
“Meath Roads Policing stopped this tractor when they found the driver on their phone.
“Using the Mobility App it was found that the vehicle had not been taxed for 16 years and that the trailer tyres were excessively worn.
“The vehicle was seized. A Fixed Charge Penalty Notice issued,” the Garda tweet concluded.
Meanwhile, on the topic of trailer safety, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) says:
“If you’re towing a trailer, it is your responsibility as the driver to ensure that both the towing vehicle and trailer are safe and mechanically sound, fit for purpose, and legally compliant with all relevant road traffic legislation, i.e. tyres have adequate tread depth and are free from defects, lights and brakes are working and the hitch is in good condition.”
