Sylvester Phelan has joined AgriLand’s growing news team.

He joins the team at a time of substantial change in Irish farming, with developments from both at home and abroad impacting heavily on the sector.

Sylvester has plenty of know-how in the agricultural arena. From a dairy farming background in Co. Laois, he has extensive experience of on-the-ground farming, regularly milking cows on the home-farm whenever he can.

He successfully completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and History in University College Dublin (UCD), during which time he also worked as a news journalist for the university’s student newspaper – the University Observer. There, he covered a wide variety of issues and topics.

After finishing his BA, Sylvester completed a Masters of Science degree in Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development, also at UCD – compiling a thesis on ‘Farmer Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices on Grass Varieties and Grassland Management for Sustainable Dairy Farm Enterprises’.

At this time, Sylvester also undertook a Teagasc Green Cert course at Gurteen Agricultural College in Ballingarry, Co. Tipperary.

Following the completion of his studies, he worked for a period for well-known animal feed producer and agricultural merchant Liffey Mills.

Away from work and studies, Sylvester is an active member of Macra na Feirme – through his local club Camross Macra.

With Camross Macra, he is kept busy at various events throughout the year, including: public speaking; ‘Know your Ag’; talent competitions; ‘Mr. Personality’; stock-judging; and a range of sports competitions. Sylvester currently holds the role of club secretary, having previously acted as club PRO.

Sylvester is an enthusiastic traditional musician, having been a member of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann (CCE) for over 15 years. He plays the tin whistle, flute, banjo and guitar.
