Two abandoned donkeys were seized for welfare reasons by members of An Garda Síochána from poor land in Co. Kilkenny last week.

Taking to social media last Wednesday (August 26), Gardaí based in Co. Kilkenny explained:

“Gardaí from Kilkenny and Callan seized these two abandoned donkeys from poor land outside Callan this morning.

This planned action was organised following an initial welfare check on them last Sunday [August 23].

It was noted that the seizure was aided and supported by the Belline Donkey Sanctuary, My Lovely Horse Rescue, Kilkenny local authority and in communication with the Kilkenny Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (KSPCA).

Continuing, it was added:

“It is important to note that they have not been taken to the pound but instead this is the first day of their new lives as cherished creatures.

Thanks to the assistance of our partners, the donkeys, it is hoped, will be fostered and adopted together after essential veterinary care and the services of a farrier.

“No owners are likely to come forward. Thank you to everyone who has prioritised these animals’ welfare over the past few days to get us to this point,” the Garda post concluded.
