The prospect of a white Christmas looks unlikely, as the latest weather forecast from Met Eireann suggests that it will be wet for much of the coming week.
According to Met Eireann, today (Monday) will start off cloudy and wet for western areas, as outbreaks of rain move eastwards across the country.
The rain, it says, will become lighter and patchier as it pushes east, while crisp sunshine is expected in the west with highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees.
As the day turns to night, Met Eireann says there will be widespread frosts away from western coasts, with temperatures sitting at between +3 and -3 degrees.
Tuesday looks to be a wet day, with Met Eireann saying many places will be dry at first but outbreaks of rain during the morning will steadily become more persistent by early afternoon.
It also expects the rain to clear overnight with temperatures falling and frost developing as it edges closer to Wednesday morning.
Outlook
Looking towards the rest of the week, Met Eireann says Wednesday will be a bright and cold day with widespread heavy showers across Connacht, west-Munster and Ulster.
Showers are said to be only isolated in other regions. Wednesday night will be dry expect for heavy rain in the south of the country, it says.
There will be widespread frost at first on Thursday morning, leading to a bright and cold day with scattered showers in the north and west, but other regions looks set to remain fairly dry.
However, this is likely to change once it reaches Friday, as Met Eireann forecasts a wet and windy day ahead.
