The UCD Agricultural Science society (AgSoc) has this year donated a record sum of €42,000 to three charities as the academic year comes to a close.

AgSoc, a charitable organisation run by Agricultural Science students and Auditor TJ Duffy, raised the money through numerous fundraisers including events in Dublin city, Ag week and the raffling of a pedigree Angus heifer.

This year the committee has chosen to donate €32,000 to Console, the national Suicide prevention charity of Ireland.

A further €5,000 being donated to both East Clare Saint Vincent de Paul and CRY – Cardiac Arrest in the young, in honour of students who have sadly lost their lives during their time Studying Ag Science in UCD.

All cheques were presented to the charities this week – with Paul Kelly of Console being on hand to describe to the students and committee exactly the impact the funds raised would have for the charity and those they aid on a daily basis.

Console now hope to use this donation to assist in the ever growing need of the charity’s 24-hour helpline for farmers and rural dwellers under mental health stresses.

The AgSoc committee thanked all those who have supported them throughout the year, with a special thank you to their generous sponsors and the committee wished the forthcoming committee best wishes in the year ahead.
