The Irish Hill Sheep sector plays an important role in the economic health of rural economies and the maintenance of the natural landscape in many of Ireland’s most scenic areas.

To explore the issues facing hill sheep farmers in Ireland, Teagasc are holding a Hill Sheep Conference on Wednesday, 22 January in the Westlodge Hotel, Bantry, Co. Cork. The conference is kindly sponsored by MSD Animal Health and Drinagh Co-op.

Speaking in advance of the conference, Head of Teagasc Sheep Knowledge Transfer Department, Michael Gottstein said: “Low margins, coupled with reduced support payments and diminishing markets for hill lambs, has seen the sector decline over the last two decades. However there is potential to improve margins and productivity through better breeding, grassland management and flock health. We have demonstrated this on the hill sheep farms that are participating in the Teagasc BETTER farm sheep programme. “

This hill sheep conference will deliver the most up to date information in terms of Genetics, Nutrition, Health, Marketing and Policy and is a must attend event for anyone with an interest in Hill Sheep Production. This is a Sheep Technology Adoption Programme Approved National Event.
