The week ahead will be changeable and unsettled, with scattered showers, sunny spells and frost all forecast by Met Eireann.

Today, Monday, will be a cloudy morning with scattered outbreaks of light rain or drizzle, but drier and brighter weather is promised in the afternoon.

It will be a cool day with highest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees Celsius.

Met Eireann has forecast for moderate to fresh, west to northwest winds to veer northwest to north as the day goes on while becoming gusty further north.

Tonight, isolated showers will continue to affect northern coasts but elsewhere will be dry with well broken cloud.

Northwest to north winds will slacken over land and it will turn colder as lowest temperatures range between 0 and 4 degrees Celsius, which Met Eireann has said will give a slight grass frost inland.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, is forecast to start mainly dry with sunny spells, although cloud will soon increase and showers will tend to become more widespread by afternoon.

However, the showers are promised to retreat to northern coastal counties in the evening.

Northwest to north winds will increase fresh and gusty for a time tomorrow, according to Met Eireann, making it feel rather cool as highest temperatures range between 7 to 10 degrees Celsius.

On Tuesday night, showers will become confined to north and northwest coasts while clear spells develop elsewhere.

Moderate, northwesterly breezes will persist tomorrow night, but a slight grass frost will occur in places inland meaning soil temperatures will drop this week.

Showers will soon become widespread across the country on Wednesday, although Met Eireann has said that the far south will be affected by fewer showers and will have the best of the sunshine.

The showers look set to be a mix of rain and hail, with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms also.

Moderate, northwesterly winds will persist and temperatures are forecast to be several degrees below normal for the time of year.

Showers will become confined to northern and western coasts on Wednesday night but these will merge into longer spells of rain there before morning, according to Met Eireann.

Current indications suggest that on Thursday morning, the rain in the west will spread countrywide and will continue in most places for the rest of the day.

West to southwest winds are forecast to be fresh and gusty throughout the day also, and it will remain rather cool on Thursday.

Soil moisture deficits are currently around 5 to 15mm and Met Eireann has said that showers at times over the coming week will mean that they will stay around the same value and will decrease in places.

The rain will clear to isolated showers on Thursday night and winds will moderate, allowing a slight grass frost to develop locally.

However, rain and hail showers are promised to quickly spread to most parts of the country on Friday morning; many will be heavy, with isolated thunderstorms likely.

Met Eireann has suggested that some sleet or snow may even occur on mountain tops.

On Thursday, winds will veer northwesterly again and it is promised to become quite blustery. Meanwhile, temperatures for this time of year will be well below normal for the end of April.

For next weekend, the showery and wintry-feeling weather is forecast to continue with blustery northwesterly winds persisting.
