Met Eireann is promising showers, cold weather and a wind chill factor for the coming days and start of next week.

There will be rain tonight (Friday) across the north of the country turning heavy at times and further south it will be largely dry, Met Eireann says.

There will be lowest temperatures of 5 to 6 degrees in the north of the country and temperatures in the south will be between 7 and 9 degrees, it says. Southerly winds will veer northerly overnight becoming fresh in the north in the morning, it says.

Looking to the weekend, Met Eireann says that on Saturday, the rain will push southwards and will be heavy at times with brighter, dry weather developing in the north.

It will be cool on Saturday afternoon, with temperatures just 9 or 10 degrees in the north, further south temperatures will reach 14 to 16 degrees before the rain clears, it says.

On Saturday night, Met Eireann says that the rain will linger along southern counties but it will become dry and clear elsewhere. Winds will be light to moderate northerly in direction and it will turn cold with a grass frost developing while temperatures will will be between 1 and 3 degrees, it says.

Currently, Sunday will be a cold day and while many places will stay dry, there will be showers, with some turning wintry over higher ground in the north of the country, it says.

Winds will be moderate to fresh northerly and afternoon temperatures will be only 9 or 10 degrees at best, Met Eireann says and there will be an added wind chill factor so it will feel very cold.

Sunday night will be colder again with temperatures well below freezing nationwide, Met Eireann says.

Looking to next week, Monday looks to being the coldest of the coming days with moderate to fresh westerly winds and widespread heavy showers, turning wintry along the western half of the country, Met Eireann says.

On Monday night temperatures will be drop below freezing however, winds will ease and the wintry showers will become confined to western and northwestern coasts, it says.

Currently Tuesday will see further showers along western coasts, these will extend inland during the day and will retreat back to coasts overnight, it says.

The outlook for the rest of next week remains unsettled with temperatures below normal for the time of year and winds will be westerly in direction with showers all along the west coast, extending inland during the afternoons, Met Eireann says.
