Progressive Genetics appoints new team members

Progressive Genetics has recently added to its advisory and farmer support teams with the appointments of Shane Leane and Kelly Stephenson.

Leane comes to Progressive Genetics having completed a PhD in herd fertility, as well as having managed the Moorepark Curtins dairy herd.

He has a wealth of knowledge in dairy systems, fertility management and crossbreeding.

His role includes advising farmers on breeding strategies for their farming systems and strategies to achieve excellent fertility results.

Meanwhile, Stephenson also adds a wealth of farming knowledge to the team, according to Progressive Genetics – a 100% farmer-owned co-operative.

Stephenson completed an Agricultural Science degree in University College Dublin and also worked at Dawn Farms. Alongside this, she has a close involvement with the suckler and dairy enterprises at home.

Her role includes supporting herd management decisions using SCC (somatic cell count) and milk recording data.

Progressive Genetics has also been adding to the team internally, with the promotion of Jane Holton to the role of customer support.

Holton is also from a dairy farming background and has been working in semen distribution for a number of years.

The co-operative has needed to grow its team in order to cope with extra demand from an expanding national dairy herd and as new products are added to its portfolio.

Laurence Feeney, marketing manager at Progressive Genetics, noted that a recruitment advert on AgriRecruit – the specialist agricultural recruitment website – proved very useful in attracting applicants of a high standard.

Feeney was impressed with the response and the quality of candidates overall.

Progressive Genetics was formed in 1995, when the Dublin District Milk Board was privatised. It employs 300 people, including AI technicians and milk recording personnel.

It is also co-owner of the National Cattle Breeding Centre and Independent Milk Labs.
