There is one week to go until the 75th annual Virginia Show which takes place on Wednesday August 24, in Co. Cavan.

The show attracts top livestock, with the some of the best cattle, sheep and horses in the country on show this year. Also with over 300 trade stands booked in, there will be something for everyone at the show.

At this year’s show there is over €40,000 in prize money up for grabs, including the €10,000 Diageo Baileys Irish Champion Dairy Cow Competition in association with Glanbia Ingredients Ireland.

This island-wide competition will see the very best dairy cows in the land battle it out for a top prize of €2,500; followed by €1,000 and €500 for Reserve Champion and Honourable Mention respectively.

This year’s Virginia Show welcomes the International Limousin Congress, which represents the world’s premier gathering of Limousin breeders and Limousin enthusiasts.

The congress will see 220 delegates from 25 countries come together at the Virginia Show to discuss topics such breed views, research, market and technical information.

Another highlight at this year’s show is the annual Virginia Show Dairy Conference, which will see the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Phil Hogan speak at the event.

Starting at 10:30, the conference will take place at the Canteen in Virginia College, beside the Showgrounds and other speakers include Abigail Ryan from Teagasc and Mike Magan, Chairman Animal Health Ireland. They will be speaking about animal health and lameness.

Other highlights at this year’s show include, the Liffey Meats €2,000 Champion Beef Bullock and Lakeland Dairy Champion of the Show.
