Munster IFA has called for a President of the association to be elected as soon as possible.
The meeting was held ahead of next week’s IFA Executive Council meeting on Tuesday, January 5 in Bluebell.
The Chairman of Munster IFA, James McCarthy, said that a meeting was held on Wednesday night in Mallow.
McCarthy said a lot of things were discussed at the regional meeting.
“The consensus was that we need a President in place as soon as possible. In Munster there’s nine executives and they want nine presidential debates, one in each.
“If you stand back and look at it, there was a governance problem, we were trying to address the problem but it blew up.
“It’s not the first organisation to fall into trouble. There was a shortcoming in governance that blew up… and it was ripped asunder from there on,” he said.
Following on from the Munster IFA meeting, Richard Connell, Cork Chairman, has said that West Cork IFA will be holding a meeting on Saturday in Dunmanaway ahead of Tuesday’s IFA Executive Council meeting.
Connell said said that he feels the need to update members on the latest developments and to get direction ahead of the Tuesday’s meeting.
“People want more information because some of our members are thinking of travelling to protest,” he said.
At meeting of Ulster/North Leinster on Tuesday night, Bert Stewart said he received the full backing of the county chairmen at the meeting,
County chairmen from all the Ulster and North Leinster counties, except Donegal, were in attendance. Bert Stewart, the Ulster Chairman, said the meeting was very constructive and the county chairmen were 100% behind him.
He said that the proposed protest on Wednesday at the next IFA Executive Council meeting was not the way forward.
“I do not expect anyone from this region to be protesting. The people talking about protesting are people who never did anything for IFA over the years.”
Stewart also said that the current issues in IFA stemmed from the former General Secretary ruling the organisation “with an iron fist”.
“Now he is gone some of the grassroots members want to tear the organisation apart.”
Limerick IFA members will staging a protest outside IFA HQ at the next week’s Executive Council meeting.
Donal O’Brien, from Pallaskenry, has said that the protest will take place on January 5 and he is calling on all IFA members with the aspiration to ‘save our IFA’ to join them in the protest.
Earlier this week at a meeting in Tuam, north Galway branches of IFA decided they will protest at the IFA National Executive meeting on January 5.
