Advice on protecting pigs against the most common disease threats is available in a new mobile app which has been launched by MSD Animal Health.

Called Porcilis Pig, the app can be downloaded to all mobile, tablet, iPhone and iPad devices.

The app is easy to use and it provides information on the various stages of pig production, including sow and piglet, weaner and fattener stages.

It provides users with a clear and conscious guide of the clinical signs of each disease, how it occurs and the steps needed to treat and control the disease.

What information is available?

The app contains concise, well-illustrated information on 11 of the most common diseases affecting pigs and practical guidelines on prevention and control.

Among the diseases covered are Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and Mycoplasma hypopneumoniae (M. hyo) – the three major causes of disease in Irish pig herds.

Other disease hazards covered include Glassers, Atrophic Rhinitis, Erysipelas, worms and diarrhoea resulting from E.coli and clostridial bacteria infections.

It also contains a fertility management section, which includes information on farrowing induction and oestrous synchronisation.

Vaccine and health product information

MSD Animal Health is the leading provider of vaccines and health products for the pig sector. Porcilis Pig contains information on a total of 20 MSD products and guidelines on their effective use.

Thomas Gallagher, Territory Manager with MSD Animal Health, said the aim of the app is to provide practical, easy-to-access information for veterinary practitioners and their pig producer clients on the best health strategies.

“Porcilis Pig can be downloaded free. An added benefit is that it is ‘native’, which means that it can be used without internet connectivity,” said Gallagher.

The Porcilis Pig app is available from the Google Play Store and iTunes.
