Cattle marts reported a good trade and demand across the country this week. Marts in Tullamore, Mohill and Thurles provide details from their sales in recent days.

Tullamore Mart in Co. Offaly had a sale on Saturday, April 8, with 550 cattle on offer on the day; of which approximately 95% were sold.

For steers weighing between 300kg and 435kg, the average price was €2.76/kg or €1,104/head.

Steers in the 435kg to 500kg category made between €2.38/kg and €2.60/kg, while steers weighing between 500kg and 600kg made an average of €2.49/kg.

Heifers at Tullamore made an average of €2.35/kg for 300kg to 435kg animals, €2.20/kg for heifers between 435kg and 500kg, and €2.18/kg for heifers with weights ranging from 500kg to 600kg.

The mart was very busy with bullocks particularly in demand.

Mohill Mart in Co. Leitrim also recorded good trade with 370 animals on offer on Saturday, April 8; all but 4 were sold.

Steer numbers equalled 270, while the remaining 100 animals were comprised of heifers and cows.

Steers of a lighter weight of between 360kg and 420kg made an average of €2.92/kg, with a range of €2.70/kg to €3.00/kg.

Heavier steers (700kg to 800kg) made an average of €2.32/kg, ranging from €2.30/kg to €2.40/kg.

A snapshot of individual steers showed a 485kg animal making €1,280, a bullock of 615kg selling for €1,450 and a 545kg animal also going for €1,450.

Heifers of 500kg weight made between €2.35/kg to €2.45/kg. Factory-fit cows were sold for over €2/kg in general.

Thurles Mart in Co. Tipperary, released impressive figures as well; a total of 1,318 animals were on offer at the sale on Monday, April 10.

A sum of 726 Bullocks were on sale this week, making an average of €797/head or €2.09/kg.

Heifers made an average price of €828.17/head or €2.22/kg. There were 289 heifers that went under the hammer at the sale this week.

There were 73 cull cows in the latest report, making an average of €909.38/head (€1.56/kg); some 230 calves were present, averaging €201.31/head.
