A maize and beet variety open day is scheduled to take place in Ballinacrusha, Cobh, Co. Cork tomorrow (Tuesday, October 3), with things kicking off at 10:45am.

The open day, organised by Goldcrop, will have a focus on “increasing farm profit using maize and beet”. There will be 15ac of crops on show, including maize (both with and without plastic) and beet varieties.

For maize growers, the open day will allow visitors to view the maize variety trials on show. It will also feature the launch of new varieties, such as Feeditop and Spyci.

The event will also feature information on the Goldcrop ‘Recommended List’, as well as candidate varieties with and without plastic. Variety recommendations for 2018 will be given, along with crop management advice.

Meanwhile, on the beet front, the launch of new varieties such as Tarmina feed beet and Viridis fodder beet will take place.

As well as this, visitors will get to see variety trials of: fodder beet; feed beet; and sugar beet varieties. Performance such as current yields and dry matter will be discussed, while crop management advice will also be given.

Goldcrop will then be moving the affair to the Midleton Park Hotel for lunch, followed by a presentation and discussion titled ‘Maize and beet crops – better value now than ever before’.

This talk will feature topics such as: the contribution of the crops to the profitable expansion of the dairy and beef sectors; maize and beet as cash crops on tillage farms and rotation benefits; and the costs and value of growing in a range of situations – outside farm (near and far), rented land and contract growing.
