Yara, the Norwegian fertiliser company has committed to a future in Ireland with the opening of a new import and bagging facility in Co. Cork, the company’s Svein Tore Holsether has said.

Speaking following the opening of the terminal in Ringaskiddy on Thursday, the company’s CEO said that Yara sees Ireland as a valued partner, as Irish farmers are some of the most productive in the world.

“Having a presence in countries that we operate is crucial to use, that is the only way that we can really understand the need of the farmers and how we can contribute.

“The presence is reinforced by investing in logistics and infrastructure, like the Ringaskiddy Terminal, he said.

The company remains focused on working with Irish distributors and farmers to ensure they get the best possible production from its range of fertilisers, he added.

For Yara, this is an investment that ties us even closer to the Irish market, enabling use to serve our customers and farmers better.

Terje Knutsen, Yara’s Senior Vice President and Head of Crop Nutrition said that are core part of the companies business in Ireland will be connecting with distributors and farmers.

“We have a lot of experience that we can bring to make sure that we increase the productivity on the farm and increase the quality of the produce.

“To do that, we need to have feet on the ground so we have to increase the size of the office here,” he said.

Yara’s Irish Business Manager Nicholas Morrison also spoke at the event, saying that the opening of the facility in Cork has taken many years of planning.

Morrison said that the positioning of the facility in Co. Cork was strategic, because Munster and South Leinster has over 12,000 dairy farmers using just under 1m tonne of fertiliser annually.

He continued to say that Yara will offer these farmers competitive fertiliser alternatives and more choice.

“We are one of the very few companies that can provide very highly complex compound fertilisers for farmers both on the NPK compounds and the Nitrates,” he said.
