Over the last few days, a number of farmers in the east of the country have contacted Agriland about donating haylage to their flooded counterparts in the west.

One such farmer, Paddy Kennedy from Borris in Co. Carlow, is offering bales of haylage to flood victims in the midlands-west.

While Paddy said it is not top quality, it is free. He is also putting up his yard as a depot from other farmers in the region who would like to donate straw and fodder to those affected.

“If people were going to bring bales, if others wanted they could donate diesel for transport or if they wanted to do a run.

“If a few wanted to donate a drop of diesel, I’m happy to facilitate that.

I lost my leg in a farm accident two and half years ago and all my neighbouring farmers rallied around me that summer for silage cutting etc.

“So I just want to give something to these poor people that would do the same for us,” he said.

If you would like to donate haylage, diesel or volunteer haulage you can contact Paddy on 087-2707166.

Storm Desmond and ensuing rains caused widespread flooding in parts of the west, southwest and northwest with many farmers seriously affected.

As a result of the prolonged rain, rivers have burst their banks causing waterlogged farmland and bog to flood.

Many farmers’ land is under several feet of water in places and affected farmers have endured a very difficult situation, the IFA has said.
