It has been confirmed that a murder investigation is now underway in Co. Kerry following an incident involving a teleporter.

An elderly man died after the car he was driving was involved in a ‘collision’ with the teleporter.

Gardai in Listowel are investigating the incident, which occurred in Rattoo, Ballyduff in Co. Kerry this morning.

Superintendent Dan Keane of Listowel Garda Station confirmed to Agriland that the investigation is being “treated as a murder inquiry rather than a road traffic accident”.

Both the Gardai and the Emergency Services were called to the scene at 8:45am.

The driver of the car, a male in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the teleporter was uninjured. The Garda Technical Bureau has been called.

The road has been closed off in order to carry out a full examination; the scene has been cordoned off and the car was reportedly covered from view by the Gardai.

It is believed the State Pathologist will attend the scene after 5pm this evening.

A man in his 60s has been arrested by investigating Gardai and is currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Listowel Garda Station.

It has been confirmed that both men previously knew each other prior to the incident. The motive behind the alleged murder has not been confirmed by Gardai.

However, Agriland sources believe that the motive could involve a dispute over land. It is reported that Gardai became suspicious when puncture wounds were discovered on the victim’s body.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information is asked to contact Listowel Garda Station.
