A seminar addressing the impact of nutrition and the environment on equine health and the ability for thoroughbreds and non-thoroughbreds to perform as athletes, will take place next month.

Hosted by the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) and the Irish Equine Centre, the event will take place at the Seagoe Hotel, Portadown, Craigavon, on June 14.

There will be three speakers on the night. The initial part of the seminar will cover the link between equine nutrition, digestive issues, parasitology and increasing challenges such as antibiotic resistance; all of which can influence equine performance.

Prof. Tom Buckley, Head of Microbiology at the Irish Equine Centre, will discuss the importance of gut flora in equine health.

Caoimhe Delaney will give a presentation on equine nutrition, highlighting what nutritional analysis is available from the Irish Equine Centre and why it matters.

Alan Creighton will address the environmental aspects of equine health in the final element of the seminar, including the influence of mycotoxins on equine health.

There will be plenty of opportunities for discussion on all topics and the key speakers will be available after the seminar to answer any questions.

Admission to the seminar is free of charge and all those with an interest in horses are very welcome to attend.

Doors open at 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start at the Seagoe Hotel on Wednesday, June 14.

Those interested can sign-up for the event on the CAFRE website.

Meanwhile, two talented floristry students attending the CAFRE, Greenmount Campus, made it to the final of the world-famous Royal Horticulture Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show.

Eilis Quinn and Clare McAuley crafted hand-tied, presentation bouquets to reach the final of the RHS Young Chelsea Florist of the Year competition, taking place later this month.
