The body of a man killed in an accident on a farm in Co. Cork has been recovered. The man was killed when the trench he was working in collapsed.

The accident occurred on a farm near Roovesmore, Coachford, Co. Cork at approximately 10:10am yesterday morning (September 28).

Emergency services were called to the scene, but it is understood that the body of the man was not recovered until later that evening.

The deceased has been named locally as 33-year-old Denis Cullinane. According to Cork’s Red FM, the man was working in a 5m deep trench when the accident occurred.

It is believed he was helping a neighbouring farmer to lay pipes in a field in order to improve drainage when tragedy struck.

Once his body was recovered, a doctor is understood to have pronounced the man dead at the scene and he was removed to Cork University Hospital.

A post-mortem is scheduled to take place today, Cork’s Red FM added. An investigation into the workplace accident will be initiated by the Health and Safety Authority.

This fatality adds to the growing number of tragedies on Irish farms this year. In recent weeks, a number of farmers have lost their lives as a result of farm accidents.

The most recent of which was where a 67-year-old man was killed in an accident involving a quad in Co. Mayo on Thursday, September 21.

In the same week, Martin Kehoe Jnr – son of three-time world ploughing champion Martin Kehoe – died while working in or around a molasses tank in Foulkesmills, Co. Wexford.

Prior to that, one man lost his life and two more were hospitalised following an incident in a mushroom processing plant in Co. Monaghan on Monday, September 13.
