Ballinasloe Mart: Pics and prices from heifer and bullock sale
Ballinasloe Mart’s weekly heifer and bullock sale took place on Wednesday last (February 7). A mixture of farmers and feedlot buyers competed for cattle at the sale. mart
The mart’s manager Eilish Curley was happy with the sale and noted that numbers were running at average for this time of year.
There was a brisk trade for both bullocks and dry cows. However, the heifer trade was slow at times.
Eilish noted that the main reason for this could be the fact that suckler farmers are reluctant to purchase replacement heifers. mart
“Many farmers are pulling numbers back on suckler farms around here. That’s the way its gone with the beef farmers. Some are even thinking of giving it up completely,” she explained.
On the day, 147 cattle went under the hammer. In addition, a number of dry cows were presented for sale. A 75% clearance rate was achieved.
In the heifer ring, 60 heifers were on offer. A clearance rate of 67% was achieved in this ring and 20 animals failed to find new homes. Heifer prices mirrored last week’s sale. These Lots averaged €2.16/kg. mart mart
