Autumn was drier and milder than normal says Met Eireann

Autumn 2015 was drier, windier and milder than normal in many places, according to Met Eireann.

Looking at temperatures, most stations reported slightly above average temperatures.

Monthly mean air temperatures were below average in September, variable in October and above average in November, it said.

Difference from autumn LTAs were from -0.3 degrees Celsius at Markree, Co. Sligo to 0.6 degrees Celsius at Dublin (Phoenix Park), Cork Airport and Roche’s Point, Co. Cork.

Mean temperatures ranged from 9.5 degrees at Knock Airport, Co. Mayo to 12.4 degrees at Sherkin Island, Co. Cork.

Highest maxima were all reported in September, with autumn’s highest temperature of 20.3 degrees reported at Mullingar, Co. Westmeath on September 10.

Over half of stations reported their seasonal maximum temperatures were the lowest in six or seven years, Met Eireann said.

Rainfall

Seasonal rainfall totals LTAs were variable with the majority of stations reporting below LTA rainfall.

Variable monthly rainfall was reported in September, with mainly above average rainfall in November and below average in October.

The driest area (compared to monthly LTA) was in the south in October where monthly LTAs of just above 40% were reported.

The wettest area (compared to monthly LTA) was in the midlands during November where over 200% of the normal monthly rainfall was reported.

Autumn percentage of LTAs values ranged from 73% (237.0mm) at Johnstown Castle, Co. Wexford, its driest autumn in eight years to 120% (328.6mm) at Shannon Airport, Co. Clare, its wettest autumn in five years.

The wettest day was on September 11, in Newport, Co. Mayo, its wettest autumn day since 1968, its highest second since the station opened in 1960, Met Eireann said.

Sunshine

Seasonal sunshine totals were lowest at Knock Airport where 186.5 hours (daily mean 2.1 hrs/day) was reported by Met Eireann.

The highest seasonal sunshine was 286.7 hours (daily mean 3.2 hrs/day) at Malin Head, Co. Donegal, it said.

Casement Aerodrome and Dublin Airport both reported their dullest autumn since 1992 and 1993, respectively with monthly totals of 260.4 hours and 279.3 hours.

The most sunshine in a day was on September 8 at Belmullet, Co. Mayo with 12.6 hours while the number of dull days ranged from 27 at Belmullet to 35 at Knock Airport.

Wind

Storm Barney brought autumn’s highest gust of wind, according to Met Eireann.

Autumn’s highest gust and highest 10-minute wind speed were both reported during Storm Barney (on November 17).

Seasonal mean wind speeds ranged from 5.8 knots (10.8 km/h) at Fermoy (Moore Park), Co. Cork to 15.2 knots (28.2 km/h) at Mace Head, Co. Galway.
