Controversy has hit the Great Cherry Cake Competition at the Iverk Show last weekend. The hugely successful county show, which celebrated its 187th year, saw more than 21,000 people flock to Pilltown, Co Kilkenny on Saturday.

Among the many highlights were one of the biggest beef class in Ireland sponsored by AldiABP Group and Irish Angus. Dawn Meats also had a display of live cattle for the public to judge. There was also a huge number of events in all sections of the showgrounds with 45 cattle classes and 50 horse classes providing the main events of the day.

In addition there was more than 200 trade stands plus a dog show, a sheep show, a vintage display, a Most Appropriately Dressed Lady and Bonny Baby competition, a garden and family area and a poultry marquee.

The prestigious annual Great Cherry Cake Competition was not without controversy as a complaint was made about the size of the cherries used in the winning entry. A spokeperson for the show said there are often complaints at the competitions. According to the organisers the cherry cake recipe must be strictly adhered to. “Everyone wants to put in their tuppence’s worth. The result is down to the judges at the end of the day.”

All in all  the Iverk Show was  a great day out for the family.
